Pedestrian, an arts and music UK based organisation dedicated to furthering the artform in communities around the midlands and long standing partners of Spin Science, have announced the release of their ground breaking new tutorial system, the Tutoritool, the first interactive tutorial record to relate the fundamental skills behind turntable music creation.
A long time in the making this new release aims to provide an interactive vinyl tool to teach techniques to everyone from newcomers to musicians who want to learn more about the artform. Cleverly combining already established tutorial elements (such as those you might find in videos) alongside battle records and scratch tools elements (such as beats to practice to and instruments sounds and samples) the Tutoritool places the same emphasis on both the technical and compositional aspects of the turntablist artform.
In the words of Tutoritool creator Ski: "The double vinyl package consists of two sides of lessons, which illustrate popular scratch techniques that can then be used to create new music using the turntable. You can practice alongside recorded examples to improve technique or become a turntable musician by accompanying the virtual turntable band. Flip over the second side of the Tutoritool and find two copies of a suite of intrumentals and sounds from which to create jazz, rock, hip hop, rock or drum n bass."
"The best way to recognise the power of the Tutoritool is to use it. Regardless of your music expertise, the Tutoritool will reignite the creative flair of the most disheartened DJ, whilst opening the door to a whole new world of music creation for anyone who uses it."
Having had the chance to play around with the Beta version of the Tutoritool for the best part of last year we can safely say that this does indeed do what it says on the cover, taking tutorials and teachings of fundamentals (both technical and musical) to a new level and giving the sometime stale world of video tutorials a kick up the arse by offering an alternative which is ultimately much more hands on and interactive then any video or DVD you can find today. The inclusion of more musical elements, such as instrument samples, also open up another door (first touched by tutorials with Qbert's DIY vol2) for tablists to practice with musicians and each other in a creative way. Once you can master the techniques and know how to flip your x click flares, it gives you access to a next logical step for many of focusing on using the techniques learnt to create music, on your own or with others.
In addition to all this the Tutoritool can also be a perfect addition for anyone out there already involved in teaching and workshops. With a few copies of the Tutoritool you can deepen the lessons and teachings as well as give the students a hands on tool designed to help them further their creative and technical skills.
The limited edition first run of the Tutoritool (1000 copies) will set you back £15.99, plus postage and packing. It is already available to buy from Tutoritool.com and Pedestrian.info. You should also be able to find it at Suspect Packages in the coming weeks as well as quality retailers across the UK. Inquiries for overseas orders and the such can be addressed to Pedestrian via their site.
