You may have already heard or seen the work of these guys as we've had them in our links for a while and mentioned their documentary a while back. Well they've just revamped their site so we thought it was time to remind you, or as the case may be let you know, of who they are and what they do.
Based in London, Studio Rarekwai specialises in the promotion of international music and culture through documentary production and film. The team consists of international individuals originating from Japan, India, South America and Europe, giving them a unique access into a variety of cultures and situations.
Their first self-produced documentary, 'Scratching the Surface: Japan', is a look at hip hop culture in Japan, focusing on DJs and turntablists as well as other practices, with appearances by Japanese artists such as Baku, Iden, MSC and music by DJ Quietstorm. The documentary has been receiving critical acclaim after doing the round at festivals and being shown on French/German TV station Arte last year. The guys are currently trying to secure distribution and manufacturing for a European and worldwide release. In the meantime the documentary will soon be released in Japan. Other projects of theirs include a follow up called 'Scratching the Surface: Korea' and a documentary about a Colombian rap group, Zona Marginal, as they travel through Europe spreading their political message about life back home.
SRK are also involved in a variety of other audio visual projects, including videos for UK crews such as Task Force and Undali. So be sure to go and check the revamped site which includes trailers and extracts for all their documentaries and also videos and more. And look for more news regarding the release of 'Scratching the Surface: Japan', as well as some common projects between Spin Science, Turntable Radio and SRK. The first of which is an exclusive interview with DJ Baku from Tokyo in our next update and more to be announced very shortly.
