Dj Big Bang part 1, a quick chat with Grazzhoppa...

Grazzhoppa's DJ Big Band performed at The National Phonographic turntable festival in November 2003, in Rotterdam. A live turntable band composed of Grazzhoppa, Lamont, Vindictiv and Optimus amongsts other (and up to 12 DJs at any one time), they have slowly but surely been making waves across Europe in their own style. We caught a few words with DJ Grazzhoppa, the founder of the crew who is also part of the Realtablist crew alongside Lamont.

Code

Can you give us some info on the history of your crew?

Realtablist.com is me and lamont formerly known as 7420xl deejayz and optimus and vindictiv from holland. The bigband are people i worked with before who have good timing, good ideas and who ain't on an ego trip.

What is the concept behind realtablist.com?

We bring you turntablist funk.

What's your definition of turntablism?

Creating new music by using recordings on vinyl and manipulating then with a turntable through scratching. It's not puttin a record on and mixing the new britney spears after that.

Where do you find inspiration for your routines?

In my studio listening to records for sounds.

How do you agree on the routines when there are so many members in the crew, do you have arguments?

We agree on stuff in group. Like i said no egotrips. There is enough space for everybody to do his thing.

Have you heard of scratch notation systems (like the ones by A-Track and John Carluccio), and what do you think of them? Have you ever used them, do you plan to use them?

I've heard about it but i haven't seen it.

Have you tried Final Scratch, D-Vinyl or Serato Scratch Live? Do you use them in the studio or in a live situation?

I 've tried final scratch. I like the idea but it still had a couple of problems like digital crackling when doing a simple baby scratch with a bassdrum. I don't use it.

Can you give us your opinion of the turntablist scene in Belgium?

There is a lot of talent over here.

What projects/releases and events do you have coming up in 2004?

I 've put out mr.greedy "ya bitch got a fullet" on cheebawax, there's a new afterhours battle break record coming called "collected, inspected and injected part two", me and lamont got this new show with a loopstation and effects. Big band part 2 with 12 djs in october maybe.

Where do you see turntablism in 10 years?

We'll see then.

For more info on Grazzhoppa and the band check realtablist.com and nona.be. Be sure to check our interview with Big Band partner and Realtablist head Lamont which you can find in our interview archive and look out for upcoming features on live turntable bands.
