We continue on the free albums downloads with an offering from Jay Cutz aka African this time. Some of you may remember Jay as he wrote a dope little article about South Africa for us a while back, and he's been featured quite a few times on the Turntable Radio shows.
Over the last few years he's been making music using turntables, nearly releasing an album last year thanks for a small indie European label, unfortunately this had to be pulled due to some sampling issues. Still the music was there to be heard so he has compiled a selection of tracks into 'Album from Africa' which is freely downloadable for your aural enjoyment now. Read on for the liner notes and head over to the downloads section to get your hands on the LP.
Free stuff is good, especially free music. In comes Poland's finest, DJ Eprom with an album that's been 3 years in the making and which he's now giving out for free on his website.
Entitled 'Commodore: The Data Wars' the album features a range of styles, compositions, freestyles and beats all arranged, performed and produced by Eprom, under 3 different alias. You'd be excused for thinking the man has some mental problems, but the explanation for the use of split DJ personalities is actually pretty sound. As is explained by the man himself below.
Homeboy got that crack! Catching up with A-Trak in 2006
Sitting in a studio in a flat somewhere in New York with Hell Rell from the Dipset exclaiming ‘that’s that crack!’ when hearing a beat isn’t the type of setting where you think you’d find a world renowned turntablist and young producer, responsible for said beat. The beat in question was for a track, ‘Don’t Fool with The Dips’, that became one of the big surprise of 2005 in some music circles – a track featuring 3 young members of the Dipset collective rhyming over a production made mainly from turntables isn’t exactly run of the mill after all. But then again at just 24 years of age the man responsible for this, A-Trak, isn’t your average turntablist, DJ or producer. In the last 2 years he has made a habit of breaking norms and surprising followers of his early days as a turntable prodigy and battle DJ champion, as well as surprising a fair amount of people out of scratch circles since becoming Kanye West’s tour DJ. So how exactly did this Canadian boy, who still hasn’t finished his university studies, get to go on the road with Kanye for the last 2 years, have the Dipset rhyme on his track, end up doing cuts for Common’s lauded ‘Be’ album and more importantly achieve what most turntablists haven’t managed to by linking the underground, and inward looking, scratch scene to the current mainstream of rap and hip hop? Whatever answer you’re thinking of is probably off by a few miles. It involves a shop in London, a routine, some guts, Dame Dash, and of course skills.
This one has been a long time coming, but it's finally here. EB are debuting their new Scratch Series with 2tall's first break record, 'Peaceful Warrior'.
The record offers up a nice selection of beats, sentences and samples all cooked up by the man over the last year and ideal for practice, battles, production etc... You can check some short samples here: Side A & Side B.
The record is out now in all good stores and online worldwide, with distribution handled by Amalgam US. Japan had the exclusivity for the last few weeks, and it's now arriving everywhere else. So if your local record pusher hasn't got any just request them or hit up Juno and the likes who are already stocking it. Turntable Lab is also carrying copies now for US and worldwide heads.
EB are also rolling out the second installment in the series next month, this time with Daredevil handling things with his first break record, entitled 'Break Fluid'. You can expect more of the same goodness, with beats, sentences and samples all cooked up and arranged for practice, live use and production. If you checked the recent Cuts of Culture compilation you'll have an idea of what to expect as Daredevil's track on the compilation was composed using the record.
For more info on all this and the guys themselves hit up eclecticbreaks.com, dj2tall.com and Daredevil's myspace page.
The last part of our footage from the DJs for Life event is finally online for download. This time it's the UK's own Tigerstyle with an extract from his showcase, which includes new versions of his now infamous 3 decks and CD routine. Head to the downloads section (newest files at the bottom of the page) to grab it. You can also stream it from You Tube below.
Unfortunately we won't be able to put up any footage from D-Styles' set for download as previously mentioned. So I guess you had to be there to catch that one. Next up is an exclusive A-Trak feature and more music and videos coming as well.
